So, a very belated prize for [livejournal.com profile] kat_lair, who won the Harry Potter quiz at the Bacchanalia. This is meant to be a drabble - it's a ficlet. It was meant to be in September - it's now January. La la. Anyway, it's finally written.

Title: With all my flesh, and keep my soul
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: Harry Potter/Draco Malfoy
Rating: PG13

Dearest Bacchi!

Broadstairs Bacchanalia will return in 2016, this time incorporating Halloween/Samhain celebrations (including costumes of course!) and a special remembrance ceremony dedicated to those who we've lost. The date is 28-30/10/2016 and the place Broadstairs, Kent. More details will follow in the new year, but please put this date into your diaries now to reserve it.

So - who's for Broadstairs 2016?
[identity profile] moth2fic.livejournal.com
Here's my assortment of prompt responses, written in Broadstairs (in [livejournal.com profile] kat_lair's lounge in very enjoyable company. Two drabbles, a ficlet and a short fic. We picked fandoms and genres out of hats and could throw back a fandom we'd never heard of. There were love hearts with words we had to include, and a special attempt at purple prose. Click on the titles to take you to the work which is on AO3 in the Broadstairs Bacchanalia Collection as well as on my account. We had fun. Hopefully you will too!

This is addressed to a lot of people, mostly UK based, who belong to the Broadstairs Bacchanalia com or to the f’lists of the com members. It was handed out in print format to the attendees at the recent con and will be on the com’s site. It can be disseminated to anyone who might be having trouble with trolls or cyberbullying provided this introduction is included.

Although the information is based on some AO3 staff discussions and research, this should in no way be taken as an AO3 official handout. It consists mostly of a slightly edited version of a letter one of the Abuse team on AO3 has drafted for sending to the people who have been affected so far by the Hockey RPF trolling issue. (This was discussed in two presentations at the con and in general conversation on the beach etc.) Edited in the sense of removing personal/identifying information and adding a few words to make it intelligible to people who have not already submitted a report or are not in US or in Hockey rpf fandom. This advice is not complete and we welcome additions. It is also, of course, not limited to the current issue or fandom.

Please disseminate this widely but make sure you keep the intro. I've chosen public as the security option so you can send people here or copy paste it wherever you like.

This is the text of the talk I gave at the con in September. I had it printed out as handouts and [livejournal.com profile] margaret_r had made it all pretty with text boxes so that it was easier to read and refer to but LJ doesn't seem to encourage that kind of thing... So you get the unadorned version.

I'll start with an overview of three methods of getting your work to other people's eyes - fanfic, mainstream publishing and self publishing. I am not even going to touch on vanity publishing which is where you actually pay someone to publish your work. It was valid once upon a time - early nineteenth century? Not any more.

(I have chosen the 'public' security option because I hope to send some of my f'list here and they aren't - yet - members.)

Dearest Con Writers!

I have created a Broadstairs Bacchanalia Parent Collection on AO3, with Sub Collections for each year. So, as you post this year's fics you can add them to the Broadstairs Bacchanalia 2015 collection. And everyone who has posted their fics from last year at AO3, could I please ask you to edit your fics and add them to the Broadstairs Bacchanalia 2014 collection.

As you post or edit your fic AO3, look for 'Post to Collections / Challenges' on the form. Then start typing Broadstairs... onto the text box and the relevant collection options should crop up. Any problems, do ask.

Much obliged!

Title:  A Vampire Romance
Fandom:  The Hobbit
Pairing:  Bilbo/Thorin
Rating:  PG
Wordcount: 200 - just a little ficlet
Warnings:  Crack and deliberate purple prose.  This is silly people :)

Author's Notes: Written as part of the writing exercise where we had to write a fic to a randomly picked fandom (The Hobbit in my case), and prompt (mine was vampire AU) but we had to make it as purple as possible.  This was also written over about a 20 minute period and is very silly.  Enjoy!!

It was a dark and stormy night ...
[identity profile] moth2fic.livejournal.com
So we had a picnic on the beach, watched by seagulls - mother(?) and son(?). The baby, who was nearly as big as the parent, had clearly been sent to beg alone and was distraught - very noisy and quite pathetic. We ate, drank, and did a Harry Potter quiz, provided by [livejournal.com profile] pushkin666. It was a close thing but the winner was [livejournal.com profile] kat_lair with 32 correct answers out of 40. The prize was that the other competitors should each write a drabble of the winner's choice. This turned out to be Harry Potter - any character, genre, etc. So here's my offering (already emailed to the lucky winner). It's exactly 100 words though we realise that all kinds of very short ficlets count as drabbles. It's also sort of f/m but really gen and suitable for all ages. Under a cut for size and for surprise value. Click on the image for the full size.

[identity profile] kat-lair.livejournal.com

Greetings all!

Even with only 4 members confirmed, Broadstairs Bacchanalia is forging ahead (like a sparkly steam engine), with plenty of room for more participants should you find yourself available 11-13 of September to come and join us.

However, progamme and activities must still be planned (structure is important if flexible).

Timings: Suggestion is that the 'official programme' runs from ~2pm on Fri 11th to 1pm on Sun 13th, with joint meals/hangouts/etc before and after as well if people are around and feeling up to it

Food: As last year, the plan is to have picnic type ‘everyone contributes something’ type of lunches on most days. Friday’s dinner would be provided by yours truly and pushkin666. Saturday’s official con dinner would take place in a local restaurant. With the above in mind, please let us know if this broadly speaking sounds like a good plan, and if you have any specific dietary restrictions/allergies we should take into consideration.

Talks/Activities: Considering the potentially small attendance we're planning to keep this relatively informal and relaxed, but it would still be good to have some clearly defined activities and items for discussion. We have some ideas but we also need your input. Please comment with your ideas. Would you be willing to give a short talk (prompt discussion about) a fannish topic? Do you want to pimp a small fandom? Run a writing workshop?

Some suggestions:

  • Vid show

  • Fandom Scrabble (extra points for fandom related words!)

  • Writing exercises, a few different ones, e.g. fandom/trope bingo

  • New fandom pimp - Person of Interest and Community by [livejournal.com profile] kat_lair

  • Returns and reboots: the good, the bad, and the ugly by [livejournal.com profile] pushkin666

  • Switching with dark fic, do unto others as you would not have done unto you by [livejournal.com profile] kat_lair

Roll Call!

Jun. 6th, 2015 05:54 pm
[identity profile] kat-lair.livejournal.com

Right! We are a bit late (ish) with this but RL has been hectic. However, now is the time to put your hand up if you are reasonably certain that you can make Broadstairs Bacchanalia this year. Based on the poll, the weekend we're going with is 11-13 of September. Location: Sunny Broadstairs as before.

We had plans to rent a biggish house for the occasion (moth2fic, will need the details off you) if there are enough participants to merit that, and thus take care of accommodation (for most) and con central in one swell swoop. However, if only a small handful can make it, that's not really worth it and instead people can make their own accommodation arrangements and we can have con fun at mine again.

Thusly, another poll.

[Poll #2013280]

Again, please pimp far and wide to any friends who might want to join us!

[identity profile] pushkin666.livejournal.com
So, this is a reminder regarding the Bacchanalia.   [livejournal.com profile] kat_lair and I are in the process of planning the second Broadstairs Bacchanalia, which as you may or may not know takes place in the small seaside town of Broadstairs in Kent, UK.

We are currently hosting a poll to see which weekend in September people prefer for this year's mini-con.  We have had some voting already take place, and will close this shortly.  So, it's up to you people who would like to come along and join us for a great weekend of geektastic and fandom fun.

First of all, let us know if you'd like to come.  It was really good fun last year with vids, fandom pimping, talks, ice cream, walking along the beach, cider and other wonderful things.

Please feel free to come along and vote, and even look at joining us in September - it's really is a great weekend.

POLL  - Broadstairs Bacchanalia returns ... but when?
[identity profile] kat-lair.livejournal.com

Dearest Broadstairs Bacchi!

The mini-con is returning, as promised! But before we can start thinking about practical arrangements (moth2fic, I think you had the whole house in mind...?) we need to settle on a date. Currently, we are still thinking September though a bit earlier than last year. So, please tick which of the below weekends you could do, and tick both if you don't mind. You can suggest other dates but the September ones were chosen to accommodate our timetables and we suspect everyone has other plans for August (plus Broadstairs will be heaving so accommodation prices would likely be higher etc).

[Poll #2000656]

And remember, please pimp the comm and the poll to your flisters in case other people would be interested!
