So at the con, I pulled both sex pollen and Stargate from the hat.  Now I don't read sex pollen fic because they just don't do it for me, so this was a tricky one.  I've posted this over on my journal, and [livejournal.com profile] kat_lair gave it a quickly filthy beta.

So I completely forgot to hand out the copies of the answers for the programme crosswords. Apologies for this. They've been sat on my desktop staring at me since the end of the Bacchanalia.

In a bid to give these to people, and to start to clear my desktop, I've converted these from PDF's to JPG/PNG's and am uploading these below.

I'll put behind a cut in case people still want to do the crosswords without the answers directly in front of them :)

If you can't see them properly please DM me and I'll send the PDF.

We drew a second lot of prompts. I was good! I worked on mine. We never got around to sharing the results so I thought I'd do it here and now...

I got, again after many rejections of people and shows etc. I'd never heard of:
*Merlin or Arthurian legend

I don't watch Merlin but some of you know my longstanding affair with Arthurian legend. My main sources of inspiration are The Once and Future King (T.H.White) and Camelot (the film).

Like the previous ficlet this is obviously unbeta'ed. Feel free to jump in!

Again, I am leaving tags to the mods.

My prompts, drawn from the hat after rejecting a lot that meant nothing to me were:
*real historical personage
*coming out

I've written in Rome fandom and was instantly inspired - at least, our organiser thinks it's worth publishing on here and I suppose I will get round to uploading it to AO3.

I've tidied it up a bit, added the sentence I forgot to read out, plus an introductory line, and changed the whole thing to first person because I think it works better that way. I'd have done that at the time if we'd had a few more minutes. How many did we have - 15? Enjoy!

I assume the mods will wrangle the tags... *g*

I must start by saying I don't speak for OTW/AO3. This is a personal view, with no authority whatsoever!

You are welcome to ask questions and I can answer based on three years experience of working as a volunteer staffer but you must understand that I can't give you any confidential information such as names or actual cases and some of my information might be only partial or just plain incorrect.

Taken from my preparation for my 'talk'.

We all pick up on ideas every day – whether consciously or unconsciously.  Something someone says or we overhear; something that happens to us; a picture, maybe something on Tumblr that a friend points out to us; an article someone suggests.  These things are as individual as we are.  We may choose to use them immediately; we may put them to one side for later use.

All of which is great and helps when we come to write, but doesn’t necessarily start us writing.  Here I’m thinking of the people like me who write short things, not those who produce the 100,000 word epics, or who write multi-chaptered fics where each chapter is 5,000 words long.  The most I’ve ever written is 14,000.  I’ve triumphantly written two big bangs over 10,000 words, but generally I write ficlets or fics up to 5,000 words.

Which means I need inspiration much more often.  So I’ve come up with some suggestions for what helps me and therefore something amongst the list may help others.

How To Survive Co-Authoring
[livejournal.com profile] kat_lair & [livejournal.com profile] pushkin666

We've written a number of fics together hence being asked to do the talk...

Why co-author?

  • Complimentary skills or expertise

  • Two minds potentially (not necessarily!) better than one…

  • Double the ideas (double the trouble…)

  • Halve the research and work

  • Easy to take different povs – writing as rpg

  • Immediate feedback

  • Learn from each other, develop new skills

  • Fun!

Things to consider

  • Do you really need to or want to co-author? Why?

  • With whom?

  • Will they be open to it?

  • Can you really work with this person?

  • Remember that best friends don’t necessarily make best co-authors…

  • Are your writing styles compatible?

  • Remember that the finished story should read like a single piece of work even with different povs

  • Both goal and process should be negotiated together

  • Agree on the story at least in broad terms

  • Agree on who writes what/who

  • Agree on how and when and how much re writing

  • Communicate, communicate, communicate…

  • Commercial co-authoring brings additional complications…

  • Rights, profits, costs, credit, legalities…

Example 1. Co-authored 'verse
Plotted together, discrete fics written separately

Example 2. co-authored fic
Alternating povs - under the cut for length and to spare those traumatised by SCD RPS of Bruno/Craig *g*

From notes... )

...to finished fic )

Useful links - I had a look around for advice out there and these were some of the better posts on the topic

Recs for co-authored fics... Sadly, I can't think of any of the top of my head although I KNOW I've read and loved some. Maybe you can help?

Hello my darlings!

Thank you again for each and everyone of you for showing up and contributing to the first Broadstairs Bacchanalia. I would like to remind you that the comm is open for any members to post con reports, photos (check with individuals first and place any pictures of people under flock) and details about your talks, links to anything you might have mentioned.

I'm going to start later today and provide some summaries of my talks and pimps (yes, including the photos hah).

[identity profile] kat-lair.livejournal.com

Hello folks,

I'm sorting the con dinner options and local place, Da's Thai Dinner looks promising and can seat us all at 18.30 on a Saturday. The only thing is that with a big group they only do a set menu, i.e. bringing a variety of dishes for the table, but it sounds good and includes a number of vegetarian options as well including vegetable sweet and sour and red vegetable curry. Otherwise we'll get beed in oyster sauce, chicken green curry and two versions of prawns (although I don't know how many will go for that so may say that just one will be enough).

So. Everyone happy with that? I've booked it provisionally and will confirm tomorrow.

[identity profile] kat-lair.livejournal.com

Dearest all,

Below is the first go at timey-wimey-tabling the Broadstairs Bacchanalia Programme. I say timey-wimey because all times are approximate. Rest assured that despite my love for lists and order I shall refrain from cracking the whip re timings too much! Flexibility and fun! I wanted to try and fit all the 'formal' activities into the time everyone is here, hope it isn't too crammed.

Please let me know your thoughts on this and any changes you think would make the whole thing even better. I want to ensure that this is something everyone can enjoy.

Dear All,

Thank you very much for your suggestions. I’m currently trying to organise all the talks and activities into a timey-wimey-table so with this in mind I wanted to gauge people’s thoughts various things.

Here are the talks and activities that we have so far listed, including the person more or less in charge. Please do not stress or hyperventilate. All we ask of the ‘presenters’ is that they come with something to start us off! This could be some key points or observations, examples, pictures, video clips, questions, topics to debate/hear people’s thoughts on or any other prompts. Nobody is required to put together any kind of detailed lecture so please do not worry! Anyway, with that calming message and in no particular order…

  • Feeling Grimm Yet? by [livejournal.com profile] kat_lair

Wowza, that’s quite a bit of stuff! So that everything goes smoothly I have 6 questions for you all, answers in comments please (too lazy to make a poll).

  1. Happy with the talks and activities?

  2. Currently I have estimated ~1h per talk/activity with the inbuilt flexibility and expectation that some stuff will take less, some maybe longer, people will wonder to the kitchen for food, we will all get distracted by talking about/doing something completely different… Does this seem about right?

  3. Would you prefer the talks/activities to be organised a) thematically (e.g. all the writing related things together) OR b) mixed-up merrily for variation

  4. Do you have any specific writing exercises that you think might work well? Please provide details!

  5. Do you have any favourite vids you would like included in the vid show? Please provide links!

  6. Do you have a fandom you would like to pimp to the others to recruit new fans? Please provide details!

[identity profile] kat-lair.livejournal.com

Dearest Fellow Fen

Broadstairs Bacchanalia planning is heating up! I have been drafting a programme and a timey-wimey-table of activities. However, currently there are still many gaps! This is where you come in! We will need your ideas and initiative for activities/talks to make our weekend extra special and full of stuff that YOU want to do and talk about!

Here we have some general points that we very much welcome your comments and contributions on.

Timing: When are you arriving and when are you leaving? Far as I can tell at least some people will be here from Thu onwards so a pre-con dinner for the early birds is planned. It would be helpful to know what time people have to leave also so that we don’t include anything too special on Sunday afternoon.

Food: At the moment, the rough plan is to have picnic type ‘everyone contributes something’ type of lunches on most days, perhaps with the exception of Sunday when we were hoping to tempt people to sample Broadstair’s lovely fish and chips, and Morelli’s ice-cream. Friday’s dinner would be provided by yours truly and [livejournal.com profile] pushkin666. Saturday’s official con dinner would take place in a local restaurant. With the above in mind, please let us know if this broadly speaking sounds like a good plan, and if you have any specific dietary restrictions/allergies we should take into consideration.

Talks/Activities: This is the big one! We have some ideas but they certainly aren’t enough to fill an entire weekend so we very much need your help. Please comment with your ideas. Would you be willing to give a short talk (prompt discussion about) a fannish topic? Do you want to pimp a small fandom? Run a writing workshop? Let us know! To give you a flavour of what we have planned so far (in no particular order)…

  • Behind the Scenes of AO3 and Organisation of Transformative Works by [livejournal.com profile] moth2fic

  • Zombie Apocalypse Now by [livejournal.com profile] dreamersdare

  • Writing BDSM & Kink by [livejournal.com profile] kat_lair & [livejournal.com profile] pushkin666

  • Small Fandom Pimp: Dance, Food and Comedy - The Inexplicable Lure of British TV RPS by [livejournal.com profile] kat_lair and [livejournal.com profile] pushkin666

  • Small Fandom Pimp: Feeling Grimm Yet? by [livejournal.com profile] kat_lair

  • Writing workshop – short writing exercises to get the creative juices flowing

  • Vid Show - Please recommend your favourite fanvids to include!

[identity profile] moth2fic.livejournal.com
So - I've booked a house...

It says it sleeps up to 8 but as I assume we all want separate beds it actually sleeps 6. So far, we have me [livejournal.com profile] moth2fic, plus [livejournal.com profile] margaret_r and [livejournal.com profile] zellieh for four nights - arriving Thurs 25th and leaving Monday 29th. Then we have [livejournal.com profile] thesmallhobbit for Friday and Saturday night, and [livejournal.com profile] moonlightmead for all or part of the time. That leaves one bed untaken so if anyone else wants to join in let me know.

So far as I can see from the info it's within walking distance of the main station. There's parking, and I will have my car, and for short distances all five of us could squeeze in.

URL: http://www.holidaylettings.co.uk/rentals/broadstairs/1373654

I will be contacting them for address and postcode so that we can actually find it as the map is not wildly helpful. You will see, if you click on availability, that 'our' weekend is booked - by us, in fact. The landlady tells me the TripAdvisor website will not allow her to give the address and postcode until after the full amount is paid. However, she says it is off The Vale.

Costs: Complex arithmetic has been taking place and somebody will need to check at some point!! The full cost is £450.50 which includes a booking fee of £25. Including a booking fee, this means they're charging £112.63 per night - so not exactly as shown in the price table but pretty near. That, of course, is between three of us on some nights and five on others... At the moment I'm assuming 3 people want four nights and 2 people want 2 though I know [livejournal.com profile] moonlightmead might want more than two so that will alter the calculations. It should work out pretty reasonable and includes all linen, towels, electricity, etc. I will make exact calculations when we have exact information!

I can pay everything in advance including the refundable damage deposit so nobody needs to pay me anything till we get there. I'm using a credit card and the deposit is not as much as my share of the total will be. Then the final payment will be paid off before any interest becomes due. And we can sort out a supermarket run for breakfasts etc. nearer the time. By the look of things we could even host part of the weekend in the lounge!

It looks quite nice and I hope I've done the right thing/chosen the right place. You wouldn't believe how hard it is to find places - all the hype about how many people a place sleeps is based on people sharing double beds... And landlords don't update their availability calendars. And, and, and... So once I knew this was available I grabbed it.

So - if anyone else wants to join us, first come first served. Or if anyone arrives last minute there could be accommodation with us. And I'll update you all by email or PM nearer the time.
[identity profile] pushkin666.livejournal.com
So, I'm reminded that September isn't actually that far off (yikes), and [livejournal.com profile] kat_lair and I thought it would be a good idea to give a bit of an update.

So far, we have 11 tentative people confirmed for the weekend and we are absolutely fracking thrilled!!

We've got some ideas of stuff we can do already, but we can discuss that later! If anybody has any ideas please post HERE

Because of the relatively small group, [livejournal.com profile] kat_lair has graciously offered to hold the get-together at her home, rather than try and find somewhere to rent for a couple of days.

She lives in St Peters, which is about 15 minutes walk from Broadstairs station, which is then about 25/30 minutes walk from the beach. The train station and the town are in the same direction. We do still intend to go into Broadstairs proper, especially on the Friday afternoon/evening.

The important thing now though is accommodation.

You'll all have to book your own rooms I'm afraid but it shouldn't be too much of a problem this far in advance.

We thought we'd post some accommodation links. You definitely need to be booking to stay in Broadstairs or St Peters. Margate and Ramsgate will have a number of links as well, but both of these are one or two train stops away from Broadstairs.

Some linkage below:-

If you need a room mate (it's much easier to share and way more fun, and certainly cheaper) post a comment here and see if anybody else is of the same mind.
[identity profile] pushkin666.livejournal.com
*taps glass*  Is this still on.  Yep it really is *g* You may well be wondering if anybody is here. Well, yes we are still here.

One of the things we've been thinking about is what might happen over the weekend of the Bacchanalia. Now, we do have some ideas, for example:-

  1. Viewing of fandom vids

  2. How to survive a Zombie Apocalypse talk

  3. Kink talk

  4. Fandom scrabble

  5. Writing a drabble/limerick

  6. Promoting small fandoms

  7. The many different types of lube used in fanfic...,  Yep that one is a doozy.

The question is though, what would you like to happen over the weekend?  Is there anything in particular that you'd like us to try and incorporate.  Would you like to give a talk about something.  Do you yearn to tell us about your fanart, how you spend your time knitting Supernatural dolls or any other such things. What drew you into fandom etc etc.

At the end of the day this is your weekend as much as ours so we'd like to know what you might like.
[identity profile] pushkin666.livejournal.com
So, whilst [livejournal.com profile] kat_lair sits on her ass on the floor, I am tasked with posting about the potential date that we're looking at for the Bacchanalia.

We are pretty much settled on the last weekend in September - starting in the afternoon of Friday 26 September, and going through to Sunday 28 September.

Please comment below to officially register your interest in attending so we have some idea of numbers.

And because I love Despicable Me, here's a fluffy macro :)

it's so fluffy

[identity profile] pushkin666.livejournal.com
So the Broadstairs Bacchanalia looks like it's a go-er.   Thought it would be better to have a comm for this, so that all the info can be put into one place, rather than spread all over LJ :)

This is one of those posts where I can post a word cloud for the event and say  "I made this" *g*, or for those of us of a certain age "here's one I made earlier"  If you look very carefully you'll see the words Broadstairs and Bacchanalia hiding amongst the fandom words.
